Happy Mother's Day

Real Mothers don't eat quiche; they don't have time to make it.
Real Mothers know that their kitchen utensils are probably in the sandbox.
Real Mothers often have sticky floors, filthy ovens and happy kids.
Real Mothers know that dried playdough doesn't come out of shag carpet.
Real Mothers sometimes ask "why me?" and
get their answer when a little voice says, "because I love you best."
Real Mothers know that a child's growth is not measured
by height or years or grade...
It is marked by the progression of Mama to Mommy to Mother.

It's the little things that count and beauty in the very smallest thing a mother sees...for there's a little bit of heaven in a small child's offering that give a mother pleasure. Wishing every mother a HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

at least since we moved here over 4 years ago!

It's a paradise for boarders, telemarkers, and skiers who love powder snow! There were 6 inches or more covering our driveway in the morning...Stay warm!

Brace Yourself

...Early winter in October: First snowfall in High Desert, Central Oregon. The first snow of the autumn blanketed the town early this morning, leading to power outages for a few hours and numerous accidents on slippery roads. A 3-inch layer of snow covered the van and twice of that fallen on the driveway since this morning. Hundreds of homes in the city were still without power later in the afternoon in the abrupt change of weather.

Winter is expected to hold fast in the cascade mountains for at least the week. Although snowfall during this time of the year is not unheard of, we are just not ready for it. I laid here and thought of the season change, the days getting shorter, Christmas is looming closer...It's time to check the list and getting busy building up the gift stash.

Meanwhile, I do hope the weather will warm up and ice patches clear by tomorrow night--hubby is driving back from San Diego on Tuesday. We want him home safe!

Winter Wonderland in September?

It's already getting really cold here. I have heard people telling horror stories about the REAL winter that's about to set in about a month. I wonder...

En route to school this morning, this awesome sight caught my eyes:

On the way back home after picking up my teenager from Band an hour later, we stopped and captured these magical moments:

...one way to make winter wonderland in September!

Gotta Love My A/C

...and it works!

The extended time interval of abnormally and uncomfortably heat wave doesn't appear to be parting any time soon. The nights never dropped below 75° with the days in 100°, it's difficult not to turn on the A/C. We finally gave in--first time this year. Oooooh, it's sweet to be COOL again (even for a few hours set at 75°) without having to drive to the library or a tea house--not that it's a bad idea...just a nice option to stay home once in awhile. Nothing's better on a hot summer's day in Bend than a wild ride down the river!

Suggestive actions you should take to prepare for the heat:
NEVER LEAVE CHILDREN OR PETS IN A PARKED CAR: Temperature can raise to 135 ° in less than 10 minutes, which can cause death to children or pets. If you see a child or pet left unattended in a parked car, you should call 9-1-1 and alert authorities.
SLOW DOWN. Strenuous activities should be reduced, eliminated, or rescheduled to the coolest time of the day. Individuals at risk should stay in the coolest available place, not necessarily indoors.
DRESS FOR SUMMER. Lightweight, light-colored clothing reflects heat and sunlight, and helps your body maintain normal temperatures.
DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. Your body needs water to keep cool. Drink plenty of fluids even if you don't feel thirsty.
DON'T DRINK ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES
DON'T GET TOO MUCH SUN. Sunburn makes the job of heat dissipation that much more difficult.

Gotta run...my yard waste, or is it my hubby, is calling out for my attention. Enjoy the glorious weekend.

Best Part of My Past...and More!

Fourteen years ago today, I promised my man in front of God, immediate families and close friends, that I would stand by him faithfully until death separated us.

Much has happened in the past fourteen years. We added three beautiful children. We experienced loss. We survived hardships. We uprooted the family. We found adventures around us. Life does throw us some curve balls and wild pitches. It feel like we have struck out more times than most. The list goes on and on.

And we've done it all together. I wouldn't have it any other way. Lets hope that this next year gives us more to celebrate. All we can do is just stay in the game Keep on swinging.

Happy anniversary, hon. I love and appreciate you more today than I ever have.

Flickr Fun and My Mosaic for Today

Live your life open and truthful
as if you were standing outside naked to the world.

I have seen this fun little game before but it didn't speak to me until I was catching up on my friend this morning.

Here's how the game works:
a. Type your answer to each of the questions below into Flickr Search.
b. Using only the first page, pick an image. I picked what popped up to me most.
c. Copy and paste each of the URLs for the images into fd's Mosaic Maker (not the individual property link.)

My answers to the Questions:
1. What is your first name? SARAH
2. What is your favorite food? SUSHI (especially raw type)
3. What high school did you go to? GALILEO
4. What is your favorite color? PURPLE and more
5. Who is your celebrity crush? ROBERT REDFORD
6. Favorite drink? THAI ICE TEA
7. Dream vacation? AFRICA (and Around the World)
8. Favorite dessert? TIRAMISU
9. What you want to be when you grow up? A MOTHER (no joke!)
10. What do you love most in life? MY CHILDREN
11. One word to describe you. RADICAL
12. Your flickr name. LIVEINFREEDOM

It does take a bit of time to figure all these out and you have to have a Flickr account, and you have to sign in.. Some of the big challenges I came upon: 1) I made things more complicated than it really was; 2) Many photos chosen were from one person that doesn't provide individual property link; 3) when I was ready to create a mosaic, only one photo came up with remaining 11 spots empty because people have opted out; and 4) press BACK instead of EDIT when creating a mosaic...DON'T! I did it not once but four times--ARGGGGG.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Live my life open and truthful as if I were standing outside naked to the world.

Whether it is reveled in or kept hidden, the lumps, bumps and scars on my body are as real and honorable as calloused fingers of a musician or the bulging biceps of a laborer.

I may not be 20 years old anymore, but, I wouldn't trade away a single battle scar. Each one is a memory. The first time I felt my child moving inside of me, when he took his first breath...his first smile and the beauty of his laughter.

We are beautiful because of who we are and have become! Celebrate the skin we are in!

Snowy Days Confirm Winter Is Still Here In March!

I'm exhausted but had a great weekend. DD#1 and hubby masterminded a terrific Easter feast and egg hunt (more magical moments captured here.)

How was your Easter?

Winter is back in Central Oregon again--happens every year--just when we have to take the studded tires off our cars! On Tuesay morning, I woke up to a fresh coating of snow flurry in our yard...before I can even get the shovel out, snow has melted away in the walk way.

We managed to venture out to Sawyer Park for a nature walk in the afternoon. The girls thought it was funny to fish out 5 flip-flops (one didn't make it in the picture) from the river.

As a bonus, we located one of three letter boxes. Besides the normal guestbook, there was a traveling stamp accompanying by a journal of its origin, where it has been, and owner's contact information. Our friend Jenn M will contact the owner by email and drop off the traveling set at her next stop perhaps in Portland later this week.

Yesterday, it was a snow blizzard while the kids were rollerblading outside FIL home in Sunriver--sorry, no photos...silly me, I left the memory card in the computer! The kids didn't care how cold and wet it was. They had a blast while I tried to stay warm, knitting away my Oriel socks.

Did you know it's Spring Break? I didn't notice it until I realized there was no Campfire meeting, Kid's Club, 4H Sewing, Gymnastic practice...As of now, only one family responded to my nature walk suggestion for our weekly Friday gathering. Not much going on here as everyone in our homeschooling circle of friends seems to be wanting a break.

Temperature continued to plummet in the night. It was down to 18 or 19°. I went to my Knitting Group last night and, as usual, had a swell time...not only because of the knitting, it was my santuary. The group is a great mix of young and old, experienced and learning knitters. We enjoyed a glass of wine and shared our projects--WOW, I was very impressed with beautiful, creative, inspiring Jackie Sario scarves, Shawna's Elizabeth Zimmerman's Baby Surprise Jacket, Cindy's spectacular knit-along Mystery Shawl, Hildy's self-designed Swing Coat, Barb's cute baby hat, Mel's scarve with recycled silk, Judi's baby sweater with hidden pockets...ooooh, did I mention a bunch of nice ladies! I got to see some latest sock and yarn from the STR sock club--OMG, they are beautifully yummy! I don't know the color name--but it's a must have if they ever make it available. All in all, I enjoyed another great evening out and can't wait to go to Friday's morning meet-up. My new knitting buddy, Hildy, and I are going to PLAY with her undersized Swing Coat--she didn't do a gauge test; now, it is too small for her (but not for me...heehee.) Instead of frogging it, I suggest adding some cable knit around armholes...let see if it works (I actually know it will.)

Hubby and kids are playing basketball in the cul-de-sac while I continue in my prayer marathon, catching up on reading, playing with yarn and techniques...I do hope we will slip out of the freeze and get a few days of decent weather--at least for tomorrow nature walk and the fiber show in Prineville on Saturday!

Another Little Snow Storm

We've gotten another snow storm since this morning...kicked up more than an inch of snow on the driveway. Nothing to French Toast Alert about really, an inch is nothing. It is old hat. Par for the course. An inch? Give me that every day. I can handle it. But seeing as there is precipitation falling from the sky...ARGH.

On a short drive home in my friend's car after Mom's Night Out this evening, Michelle and I were thinking it's like we were in one of those frosty snow globe. Snowflakes were dancing everywhere. Temperature will drop to a single-digit tonight and below zero tomorrow night.

The only consolation is that we will be heading out for California first thing in the morning and in California by nightfall, tomorrow. Forecast indicates that it will be all snowy from Bend, Oregon, to Redding, California. It would not be an easy drive for DH. It solved however another dilemma we've been tossing back and forth...travelling with snow chains or stud tires. Decision is clearly made...stud tires. The drawback would be a slow, long journey.
(Max, son of a friend, drew the manga eye, as pictured above, especially for me--I love this priceless gift.)

I've been bombarded with sad news all around me and feel mentally drained. A dear friend didn't make it to Mom's Night Out because she just discovered that her husband started gambling again. Yes, it was a problem from the past. My heart goes out to her! Just yesterday, I learned through an email that another couple in California is going through separation after a marriage of 15+ years, blessed with three children from 15 to 5. It will be awkward seeing them in this trip. Both are friends...can I be friend to both without taking side unconsciously? This evening, as soon as I walked in the house, DH greeted me with another bad news. Another couple whom we will be staying with some days, while in California, are separated! What is it with marriage trouble! I am at lost...I'm crying...I'm absorbing everyone else's negative energies--overload. I am disturbed. I pray for a clear head and wisdom so I may be good enough friend to support these troubled friends when I see them, know how to comfort and assure them that divorce, or any transition for that matter, is not the end to everything. The Devil wants us to fall flat on our face when we have a trial of this nature, and he's good at working that angle. God will provide angels (friends) to help those in need. A good friend is like an angel. I pray for strength to be just that.

Well...it's time to say goodbye. You'll be sorely missed, dear friend. I look forward to my return home in February. Until then, be free, be joyous.

A Scary Thought

Before you know it, bitter autumnlike winds validate the arrival of winter.

The glorious autumn we've enjoyed already seems a distant memory.

It's misty, gray, blurrry cold here in Springfield, OR.

Good News: Presidential candidate Ron Paul has garnered a fair amount of both attention and scrutiny for his proposals to get rid of many government agencies (IRS, FBI) and public safety net programs (even proposing demolishing Medicare altogether), all in the name of "freedom."

Not-so-good News: Imagine you're a White House staffer in President Hillary Clinton's administration. You walk into the Oval Office to hand the president some document, and she's talking with Bill. You have a brief conversation with the two of them. As you walk out, you find yourself saying, "Thank you, Madame President. Thank you, Mister President." That's just freaky...I got the shiver!
